Outdoor furniture especially can have a hard time with exposure to the elements and so good restoration is a must. Nothing beats the craftsmanship and skill of yesteryear, so we're focused on restoartion while respecting and maintaining that level of quality. More recent doors won't have been made from a few solid pieces but rather combined from flakes and fragments of wood, unlike older doors. Antique doors, windows and window frames would have been seasoned for many years, outside in the sun, to prevent cracking and warping. An advantage older fixtures have is that they don't get the modern kiln drying, which can shorten the lifespan of the wood considerably, so it's usually a good idea to make the effort to restore them properly.
